PLC vs SCADA: What's Actually Running Your Factory Floor

Walk into most conversations about factory automation in Nigeria and you'll hear "PLC" and "SCADA" used almost interchangeably, as if they're the same thing wearing two different acronyms. They're not. Getting the difference right matters, because it decides what you're actually buying.

What a PLC Actually Does

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is the machine on the factory floor that makes the real-time decisions: if this sensor reads high, close that valve; if this button is pressed, start that motor; if this limit switch trips, stop the conveyor immediately. It's fast, it's local, and it keeps running whether or not anyone is watching a screen. Think of the PLC as the hands and reflexes of your production line.

What SCADA Actually Does

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) sits above the PLCs. It doesn't replace them, it watches them. SCADA pulls data from every PLC on site into one dashboard, so a plant manager can see the whole operation at a glance: which line is running, which one has stopped, which tank is close to overflowing, which motor is drawing more current than it should. It also keeps a history, so you can look back and see exactly when and where something went wrong. If the PLC is the hands, SCADA is the eyes and the memory.

Why Most Facilities Need Both

A PLC without SCADA works, but it's blind to anyone not standing next to it. SCADA without PLCs has nothing real to supervise. The two are designed to work together: PLCs handle the split-second control decisions on the floor, and SCADA gives management the visibility to catch problems early, track performance and make decisions with real data instead of a shift supervisor's phone call.

Signs Your Facility Is Missing One or the Other

• You only find out a line stopped when someone walks over and notices, not from an alarm.
• Nobody can tell you, without checking manually, how many hours a machine has actually run this week.
• Every process change means physically reprogramming a panel on the floor, with no oversight from the office.
• You've had a spoilage or safety incident that a simple threshold alarm could have caught earlier.
